Gonzalo Vela

OPA

Hi my name is Gonzalo Vela and I'm currently a Material Science and Engineering major with research experience at Oak Ridge National Laboratory spanning computational materials science and fusion energy. I am drawn to MSE because I like understanding how things work at a deeper level and how that connects to real-world use. I’m drawn to figuring out the “why” behind materials and systems. Specifically, I am interested in fusion energy and advanced materials for extreme environments. Outside of that, I spend a lot of time with music. I currently play the piano, saxophone, and a little guitar depending on the mood. I also like 3D printing and experimenting with turning ideas into something physical. Running is part of my routine and helps me reset and stay consistent. I really enjoy traveling too, just getting out of my usual environment and seeing different places and perspectives.
